Dar es Salaam. Experts have called for the government to consider teaching entrepreneurship in schools as a way of preparing the the children to participate and create confidence among them.

Speaking at the launch of the entrepreneurship book written by one of Tanzanian female entrepreneurs Ms Maida Waziri at the weekend, they said confidence was key in entrepreneurship and young Tanzanians need to develop it early.

The book titled,  “Sauti ya Mjasiriamali: Kesho Yako Ni Uthubutu,” meaning, “The Voice of the Entrepreneur:  Your tomorrow depends on bravery to dare” covers Maida’s life from childhood to creating a niche in the construction industry in Tanzania.

“I have taught entrepreneurship for about 30 years but have never read a book with more reality like this one,” said Dr Donath Olomi, the  chair of The Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Development (IMED).

“As a nation, we need to consider teaching entrepreneurship in schools for creating awareness and showing how to participate in it,” he added.

Dr Goodluck Urassa from the University of Dar es Salaam said the book had clearly shown that there were no shortcuts in fighting poverty and being an entrepreneur hence asking parents to make sure they train their children to dare.

“Sometimes our children forget where they put their school bag and in most cases parents tell house maids to look for them…That is actually preparing children to be lazy,” he said.

Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Development Abdallah Ulega who represented the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled Ms Jenista Mhagama said he would present a motion to his colleagues in the government on how best the book will be disseminated to students.

“Students need to learn entrepreneurship from their childhood. If you read the book, we can all be entrepreneurs but the biggest challenge is daring like Maida,” he said.

VoWET roots for women owned industries

Category : Uncategorized

As Tanzania powers to become an industrializing economy, women must ensure they are at the heart of the whole drive,  VoWET president Mama  Maida Waziri has strongly advised.

Speaking in the run up to a major women business summit to be held in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, Voice of Women Entrepreneurs in Tanzania (VoWET) president was adamant that women must play leading roles in establishing industries across the country.

“We know our government sees industrialization as the main catalyst for  economic transformation- to drive economic  growth, generate employment and reduce poverty,” she noted, adding that women must take advantage of that spirit, to open up factories across the country, for posterity and their own good.

The time has come, for women to stop thinking that they cannot be able to own their own factories and brands, to enhance value for Tanzania made produce, she noted.

She said that the 3rd Championing Women Leaders in Business Summit slated for Saturday, would look at industrialising Tanzania, and how women can be at the heart of the whole drive. Women owned business should play key role in the whole drive, and should be empowered to participate.

“Time and again, we say we have no capital… but if we organize ourselves, if we come together in every village, every ward, every district, every region, it will be easy to raise capital and build the factories needed to lead to a Tanzania made industrial revolution,” Maida, who is also the Managing Director, of leading women construction company  in Tanzania, Ibra Contractors Limited, noted.

The explored for example the possibility of every Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (SACCO) in their localities coming up with factories to enhance productivity and add value.  “There are many ideas we need to explore and come up with a concrete women in business agenda that will support the government drive to industrialise our motherland,” she noted.

She said VOWET created Championing Women Leaders in Business Summit as  an annual event to encourage and inspire women to succeed in business.

“The Summit is designed to stir a national conversation about business challenges and successes. It also provides a platform for new entrepreneurs to network and showcase their products,” she noted.

The motto for this year’s summit is “Industrialised Tanzania is possible, women must be involved.” The Minister of Industries

The Minister of Industry and Trade Hon Charles Mwijage is expected to open the summit on Saturday.
